GME Variome

Region

The Greater Middle East (GME) Variome Project is aimed at generating a coding base reference for the countries found in the Greater Middle East.

The study cohort of individuals that underwent whole-exome sequencing was assembled as part of a multi-national collaboration to generate a reference population for the Greater Middle East (GME). The 2,497 individuals used in the analysis were selected from samples ascertained across three labs and recruited with the help of many clinicians involved in a variety of Mendelian and infectious disease studies. Although these individuals are not a random sample, they were ascertained as a wide variety of distinct phenotypes such that cohort-specific effects are not expected to bias patterns of variation. All study participants in each of the component studies provided written informed consent for the use of their DNA in studies aimed at identifying genetic risk variants for disease, and for broad data sharing. Institutional certification was obtained for some samples to allow deposition of genotype data in dbGaP and all summarized data was made available for general use.
